This course is a basic introduction to the fundamentals of Wind Energy and Wind Energy conversion systems. Topics include but are not limited to various types of wind energy conversion systems and the aerodynamics, blade and tower structural loads, kinematics of the blades and meteorology.
The ten modules cover:
- History and types of wind turbines
- Aerodynamics of wind turbines
- Wind energy potential, wind resources and capacity factor
- Resource Modeling and Meteorology related to wind turbines
- Structural loads on blades, towers and foundation
- Control Systems and Kinematics of wind turbines
- Power Train/Mechanical Characteristics – Gearbox, Tower, Generator
- Macro and Micro Siting
- Generators and Electrical Grid Connection Issues
- Wind Forecasting and Economics
The course is a self-paced, online learning opportunity. The course begins the date we receive your registration and payment. All course work must be completed within 3 months of that date. Once your registration information is received, Engineering-LAS Online (ELO) will send you your username and password to access the course site. For each learning module, there will be a lesson video for you to watch and review.You can order 1.2 CEUs/12PDHs at the completion of course. CEU issuing fee is $25.
Each module includes a quiz that you must pass in order to gain access to the next module’s materials. You will have 20 minutes to answer 10 quiz questions and must pass with at least an 80% to move to the next module. You can use notes and have unlimited trials to take each quiz. The questions do vary for each quiz so if you attempt the quiz more than once you may encounter different questions.
|Dr. R. Ganesh Rajagopalan is an Associate Professor for Iowa State University’s Department of Aerospace Engineering. Rajagopalan holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from West Virginia University. His research interests include computational fluid dynamics, simulation of flow through rotors, aerodynamics of helicopters, wind turbines, propellers, tilt-rotors and gas turbine engines, rotor body interference, and wind energy conversion systems.
