When to pause the recording:
Breaks – If a professor takes a break in class, please pause the recordings, as this cuts down editing time later. However, make sure that you are communicating with the professor that you have paused the recording and that they will need to queue when they want to begin again.
Review Sessions – If a professor is having a review session, please ask them if it is alright if it is posted for the online students. We have requested that instructors let us know when they are going over exams and do not want the information posted because distance students have yet to complete the exam. They do not always do that, so it is good to check.
In Class Work – If the instructor is having the students do work in class or discuss in small groups, ask the instructor. Our preference would be not to record it, because it adds little value if no clear activity is going on, but it is up to them.
When in doubt, record it!
Beginning of semester tips:
If you are not familiar with the room, come in before the first day of classes and do a test run. Ask a senior producer for help if you are struggling with the setup, and if you are uncomfortable setting up for the real class, see if someone can go to the room with you to make sure you are doing it correctly.
Greet your professor the first day of class. Make sure they know your name and a little about how the recording process goes. Make sure you know their name.
General tips:
If the recording if not getting audio, quickly but politely stop the professor and tell them you are having an audio problem and need a minute. If you cannot figure out the issue quickly contact a senior producer or call the control room for help.
Watch the monitor tab on echo to make sure video is refreshing and audio is working. Be sure to also check the echo box’s audio bars.
