How it Works

Engineering-LAS Online Learning offers programs, courses, and professional development in a convenient, online environment.  Our courses and programs are geared towards working professionals who would like to remain on the job while continuing their education and advancing in their field.

It is important to note that for credit online courses at Iowa State University are not self-paced.  There are definitive start and end dates as well as course deadlines as determined by the instructor.

Course Access

Course content is delivered online primarily via our learning management system.  Live viewing is available for most Engineering courses.  Homework is submitted electronically and instructors are available by phone and email.  Online students regularly interact with on-campus students via chat and discussion boards.

Students will receive an email from Engineering-LAS Online Learning (ELO) prior to the start of the term with instructions on setting up ISU accounts, important dates, and how to access your course.

To maintain the academic integrity of our online programs, some courses require the use of a proctor to administer exams for students.  It is the responsibility of the student to find a proctor deemed suitable by our guidelines and coordinate with the proctor to take the exam/s.

Application requirements and deadlines vary by academic department.  For details on tuition, deadlines, etc. visit the individual program pages.
