Grant Course Design Services

In addition to Basic Services, the Design and Development unit provides the following assistance for courses that have been awarded an ELO Course Development Grant:

  1. Provide an instructional designer to assist in the design and development/improvement of the online/blended course and support the developed/improved course for two offerings.
  2. Provide instructional design expertise as per the guidelines established by the Quality Matters Program on best practices for online course design. Tasks include:
    • Meet with the instructor and/or teaching assistant regularly to understand and address the course development needs.
    • Decide, in collaboration with the instructor, a timetable for course development.
    • Create and design the course page(s) as per the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0
    • Provide visual design support.
    • Ensure course content is uploaded and design finalized two weeks prior to the start of the course.
    • Assist with the creation of accessible online course materials (e.g., train the instructor and/or teaching assistant to record video lectures, use web accessibility guidelines to  create learning modules). ELO cannot provide complete video creation services (recording and post-production) but can assist in training.
    • Help instructor to create assessments online and research alternative ways of assessing student learning.
  3. Troubleshoot technical difficulties with instructor, teaching assistant(s) or students enrolled in the course. Questions related to course policies, structure, and content are to be handled by the instructor and/or the teaching assistant(s).
  4. Train the instructor and/or teaching assistant(s) to manage the day-to-day operations of the course, such as:
    • Update the course pages
    • Post, manage, and facilitate discussions on the discussion forum
    • Create and publish quizzes, manage the gradebook and student feedback
  5. Evaluation & Research
    • Test course usability, learning objective-outcome alignment, and carry out joint debriefs with instructors after the first offering of the developed course.
