Late Add & Drop Policy

Period 3 and retroactive drops or adds will not be approved except for unusual circumstances that are beyond your control.  These changes require college approval.  If you are a completely online/distance student and believe extenuating circumstances exist to warrant a schedule change during period 3 or retro-actively, you must petition the college.

Please Note:  This policy is effective for undergraduate and graduate students taking online courses in the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Engineering.

The Petition

To petition the college you must provide the following information to Engineering-LAS Online Learning (ELO) at elo@iastate.edu:

  1. Name
  2. Student ID Number
  3. Phone Number
  4. Email Address
  5. Specific Request (eg. Late drop, retroactive withdrawal, etc.)
  6. Student Explanation of Extenuating Circumstances- Be Specific.
  7. Supporting Documentation. Documentation for physical or mental health circumstances must be from a physician and/or counselor.

The Decision

Once your petition has been received, ELO will collect information from your instructor, adviser, review Blackboard activity, and any previous communication with ELO to support the petition.  This information will be reviewed by Administrative Advisers in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or the College of Engineering and they will make a decision.  The decision will be communicated to the petitioner by the college.  This process takes approximately two weeks.
