General Information
Students’ courses will start immediately once they have received our course registration notification with their username and password.
Students can start their course whenever they would like. However, unless the student contacts us with a different preferred starting date, the course normally starts after the student registers for the course and receives their course registration notification with their username and password.
Iowa State University can only accept credit card payments (All Major Credit Cards Accepted). The only exception is for the MTM Courses.
For MTM non-credit courses, Iowa State University accepts credit card payments or you can pay the MTM association using an invoice.
Each course has a different timeline for completion:
- Fundamental Skills and Knowledge of Cost Engineering [6 Months]
- MTM-1 Base [30 Days]
- MTM-UAS Certification [60 Days]
- MTM-1 Certification [60 Days]
- Relay Theory and Basic System Protection [90 Days]
- Welding of Plastic Materials [30 Days]
For non-credit courses, other than MTM non-credit courses, students will receive their certificates via email from Iowa State.
For MTM non-credit courses, students will receive their certificate via mail from The MTM Association.
Since we offer students a free preview of all courses to see if the course is right for them, we do not offer refunds. However, in extreme circumstances, we will work with students within 5 days of purchase.

Fundamental Skills and Knowledge of Cost Engineering
There will be no prerequisite for this course. The course textbook and workbook will provide information to guide you through the course.

The course cost is $950.00 (USD). This will allow you to access the course website and workbook/assignments. You are also required to purchase a textbook on your own. The textbook is from $80 to $120 depending on your membership with AACEI and if you are buying the paperback or digital version.

There are assigned readings and videos, as well as supplementary videos to prepare you for knowledge checks, major assignments, and exams. Knowledge checks are scored but not graded and provide automated feedback. Major assignments (6 in total) will all be submitted on the course website, reviewed by the course teaching assistant, and then returned with a score and feedback attached. You must receive 80% or better in each assignment. Our grader will allow you to resubmit if score is less than 80%. There is a mid-course exam graded by a Teaching Assistant (TA), and a final AACEI preparatory exam that provides automated feedback.
Once you turn your assignments in, our grader will grade it for you. You will correspond with the grader via course site. We also recommend our students to ask our grader questions before submitting an assignment.
You will need access to Microsoft Word, a web browser, and email. You will need Internet access to view course materials and grades within the course site.
This course, including the required textbook, will help you prepare for several AACEI Certification Exams (Professional Level Certifications). After successful completion of the course, you can apply to receive 8 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and a certificate of completion issued by Iowa State University. All segments of the course must be completed to earn CEU credit for the course. Partial credit will not be awarded. Certification will be issued by MTM Associations for Standards and Research, not by Iowa State University.
No, you will not be able to choose your instructor. You will be assigned an instructor based on which MTM Association you want to receive your certificate from; MTM US/Canada or MTM UK. Once you register for your course, your instructor will be assigned by the MTM office. they then will inform you on who your instructor will be. Once you know who your instructor will be for the course please work with them directly to complete your course.
Yes, we do offer a group discount for MTM courses. MTM-1 Group Registration Discount Policy can be found on our MTM site.
Proctored exams affect 2 of the MTM courses, those being: MTM-UAS & MTM-1 Certification. Proctored exams are only for the final exams for these 2 courses and can be done anywhere. After finding your proctor, they will be sent the Certification Proctored Exam and you and your proctor must decide a time and place to take the exam. Upon completion, the proctor will send it to your instructor. A proctor can be anyone that has no personal affiliation with you. Proctor possibilities include, but not limited to human resources staff, a direct supervisor or a librarian. (A Co-worker, friend, or neighbor CAN’T be your proctor.) You and your proctor must fill out the proctor agreement form on the MTM Courses, and they must get approved before you can start the final exam so do not wait till the last minute to get them approved.
MTM-1 Base Course
The MTM-1 Base Course introduces you to the basic principles, practices and terminology of the MTM approach. This introductory course gives you the foundational knowledge for, and is a prerequisite to, other MTM courses offered through the MTM Association such as MTM-1 and MTM-UAS.
Yes. The final exam included in the MTM-1 Base course is designed and delivered through the MTM Association, not Iowa State University. After successfully completing the final exam with a score of at least 75%, you will receive a certificate of completion from the MTM Association. This will provide you with access to other MTM courses where you can earn a certificate of completion and with some guidelines and interaction with your instructor you can earn your Blue Card Certification as well.
Upon course completion, you will receive a certificate of completion from the MTM Association. With your certificate of completion, you are able to enroll in other MTM courses to earn a certificate of completion and with some guidelines and interaction with your instructor you can earn your Blue Card Certification as well.
Iowa State University offers MTM-UAS online where you can earn these Certification through the MTM Association.
You are not certified for simply taking MTM-1 Base course. It is an MTM appreciation course that prepares you for the other MTM courses. You must have MTM-UAS/MTM-1 certificate of completion or a Blue Card Certification to be a practitioner.
MTM-UAS Certification Course
MTM-UAS is a copyrighted system that uses a specific methodology for work measurement. Controlled in the United States and Canada by the MTM Association in Des Plaines, Illinois, MTM-UAS is the primary work measurement system used by numerous manufacturing organizations throughout the world.
MTM-UAS awards a certificate of completion for successful completion of the course and achieving a passing score on the final exam. You can also earn your BlueCard Certification after achieving a passing score on your final, with some guidelines and interaction with your instructor. The course in its entirety is 64 hours of training in MTM-1 basics and MTM-UAS application. The certification training is available through regularly scheduled classroom training from the MTM Association or through the Iowa State University Engineering-LAS Online Learning course.
After August 1st, 2015, individuals taking MTM-UAS must be certified in MTM-1 or have completed a three-day MTM-1 Base course through classroom training from the MTM Association or through the Iowa State Engineering-LAS Online Learning course. For those enrolled in MTM-UAS before the August 1st deadline, the MTM Technical committee has agreed to waive the prerequisite.
The prerequisite, MTM-1 Base, involves a more detailed review of the history and application of pre-determined time systems, particularly MTM-1. Please note that a lite version of these materials in currently included in the existing course. It is simply a matter of degree of coverage.
$1,500 covers the cost of certification. There is a re-certification fee due every three years to MTM Associations. However, this is the same process that all students go through.

MTM Certification and MTM BlueCard
Blue Card® Certification refers to the document you could receive from the MTM Association e.V., upon successful completion of the course and other guidelines and interaction with your instructor. It is an internationally recognized certification within the MTM Community.
MTM Systems are managed and controlled by MTM Association e.V.. MTM is supported worldwide through a series of national associations, each of which is responsible for providing training and support in a particular geographic sphere.
MTM Productivity Services Corporation is responsible for activities in the United States and Canada. The MTM controls the copyrights and development of the various MTM Systems and establishes training requirements to which all of the various national associations must adhere.
The Blue Card® Certification that other associations and we offer are officially recognized by the MTM as showing that the recipient has successfully completed an IMD-approved training course in one of the MTM Systems.
The international BlueCard is evidence of the holder’s ability to use their MTM training anywhere in the world. International employers and Unions can use this as proof of the holder’s ability to use MTM correctly. The International BlueCard will only be granted to holders of an MTM Certification who complete the following steps:
- The applicant must maintain a membership in a recognized MTM Association
- The applicant will need to have successfully completed a recognized MTM training course and received MTM Certification from the associated MTM Association within the previous 3 months
- The applicant will need to submit evidence of competency in an application of MTM. This evidence must be submitted in the form of a written analysis of representative activities totaling a minimum of:
- MTM-1 2,000 TMU’s
- MTM-UAS 4,000 TMU’s
- The applicant must submit sufficient documentation to ensure that the instructor evaluating the evidence has sufficient information regarding the activity to correctly evaluate the evidence (while not required, a video of the activity is highly suggested)
- The BlueCard must be renewed every 3 years
- The BlueCard is Free to members of the US MTM Association as long as the application is made within 6 months following the MTM Certification exam
